On campus, we have many different exciting clubs that students are a part of, but only one combines the arts with philanthropic aid. The Craft Club creates art kits for children in need in the foster care system.
At meetings, students are provided the opportunity to kick back after a stressful school day. Every other Thursday, members meet in Mrs. Lindsley’s room where they create simple projects, such as crochet, collages, and drawings. Prior to Craft Club’s resurgence this year, it used to be known as crochet club, a small club on campus for those who want to learn how to crochet. Now, Cecilia Burdick and fellow club member Aaliyah continue it with a rebranding, changing its purpose and changing the club’s name.
Brudick is inspired to help children in foster care because she believes in the importance of giving back to the community, which the club is now able to do. She says, “I wanted to incorporate that [service] into Craft Club because doing art can help lower anxiety and stress, and I wanted to give to people that don’t get to express their hobbies often or at all.” Additionally, club members are given service hours for participating in volunteer work the club facilitates.
Recently, the club has been using their meetings to crochet Christmas trees, but over the span of the school year they will expand their activities to include different kinds of activities for students who aren’t as interested in crocheting. Brudick says, “We want it to be a place where anyone can wind down and enjoy doing what they love.”
