A fantastic season this year from the Girls Varsity Volleyball team, winning Regional and State championships, with regionals being the first win since 2010, and states being the first win in NBP history! The Eagle Gazette had the opportunity of interviewing libero Destiny Wiggins and pin hitter Dasia Johnson to get an insight on their successful season.
With six years of playing, senior Destiny now averages 5.1 digs per set demonstrating her impressive defensive skills. Although Destiny has many notable moments this season, she says her proudest is, “stepping back onto the court a year after my ACL injury.” Her injury may have been a setback but that hasn’t stopped Destiny from improving and dominating on the court. Destiny’s favorite part of this season so far was, “winning the regional championship because it was the first one North Broward has won since 2010.” Destiny and her team were able to win in only three sets, an amazing accomplishment due to their hard work and ability to work as a team.
Teamwork is crucial in volleyball, and our Lady Eagles are very close on and off the court, which plays a huge part into their success. That’s why Destiny shares, “I’m really going to miss my teammates and the feeling of competing for North Broward prep.” After high school, Destiny plans to extend her volleyball career stating, “I plan to play college volleyball and continue growing both as an athlete and a student.” When asked what her biggest piece of advice is for those wanting to play, she says, “Stay consistent and never give up, even when things get tough. Volleyball takes patience, teamwork, and passion.” The Eagle Gazette is excited to follow and support Destiny as she continues to play the sport she loves.
Moving to Senior Dasia Johnson, she has consistently excelled both offensively and defensively with an average of 4 kills per set. It might be Dasia’s first year at North Broward, but that hasn’t kept her from building close bonds with her teammates, she says, “When I see one of my teammates make up for their mistakes, or when they make a big play, it brings a smile to my face.” The team is constantly working hard to better themselves, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t having fun in the process. What Dasia is going to miss most is, “all the funny moments we had during practice like playing 2v2 basketball and being able to play with these amazing girls that encourage me everyday to be my best self.”
Dasia has been playing volleyball since she was five years old showing that dedication and passion creates a great player, however it’s never too late to start. Dasia advises, “There’s a lot you must put into this sport, but once you get it, it’s an amazing feeling. When you’re on the court it feels like all your distractions you were worried about goes away and it’s just you, your teammates, and the ball, and it’s just an out of body experience.” Dasia is going to continue her volleyball career at UMBC where she is also going to study to become a physical therapist. The Eagle Gazette is so excited to follow her journey to college and can’t wait for all she will accomplish!
