Math is one of the fundamental parts of education at our school, but until recently there hasn’t been a club focusing on this splendid subject. Now, we have the Math Club, which aims to unite students who have an interest in mathematics. There was a math club in previous years, however it ceased to exist. Now, Mrs. McCoy has restarted the club, aiming to “create a ‘math space’ for anyone who is interested in math but who may not necessarily be part of or qualify to be part of the Math Honor Society.” The math club is the place to be for any math-loving student.
In this club, students participate in math competitions, solve puzzles, and learn math tricks and techniques. The math club differs from the Math Honor Society because it is open to all students (not just those who meet the GPA requirement), and meets more often. Mrs. McCoy, math teacher and club leader shares, “I am excited to help bring together students who share a passion for math. I also love helping others see numbers in new and creative ways they may not have imagined before.” The club also helps to teach students critical thinking skills. Mrs. McCoy says that she believes that “in a time when AI and technology have become the go-to tools for problem-solving, it is important to remember that the brilliant minds behind these innovations were skilled in math long before such tools existed.”
One exciting aspect of the math club is the opportunity it gives students to compete in the subject. The math club is signed up with math madness, a team-based math competition. There are 10 weeks of competition, where teams face each other, answering 8 questions, ranging from algebra 1 to pre-calculus, in a span of 30 minutes. Mrs. McCoy tells us, “We will be signing up with other competitions and those from the Math Club who would like to participate are always encouraged to do so.” More competitions for the math club this year are the AMC 10 and 12, which will be held after school on November 5th in the lecture hall.
The American Math Competition, or AMC, is “the nation’s leading mathematics competitions for high schoolers and are designed to cultivate the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers.” The AMC 10/12 has 25 questions that students need to answer in 75 minutes, on topics such as algebra, geometry, number theory, probability, and more. Students taking this test have the opportunity to expand their mathematical knowledge and quantitative thinking. This test and the skills it provides, gives students the stepping stone to succeed in college-level math classes.
Math club is a space where students can challenge themselves, expand their knowledge, and develop critical thinking skills that will aid them throughout their life. With exciting future competitions and opportunities, this new and improved club is sure to be a success throughout the year!
