Coming out of last season as district champions, North Broward’s girls varsity volleyball team is having another stellar season. With a record of 14–2 (as of 9/25/25), they remain dominant across South Florida, holding the #1 spot in Florida 4A. As the season nears its end, with only three games left before the Palm League Tournament, we put a spotlight on some of the team’s standout players.
The Lady Eagles have found a rising star in Emma Luehrs. She is the current setter for the team, and she’s only in 8th grade! Despite being one of the youngest players on the court, Emma makes a remarkable impact. She currently ranks #1 in assists in Florida 4A this season, a statistic that not only highlights her skill but also her ability to elevate everyone around her. Emma explains, “It’s cool to be one of the youngest players on the team and tough at the same time. Yet, you learn so much from it.” That perspective captures her maturity, embracing both the challenges and opportunities of playing with older teammates, while carving out her own leadership role. Her vision on the court, unselfish style of play, and leadership beyond her years set her apart. Emma’s competitive spirit paired with her natural talent makes it clear she is only beginning to scratch the surface of her potential. “The plan I have for my future is to keep college-level playing an open window.” Guided by her dreams, Emma’s future in the sport looks exceptionally bright.
Another leader on the team is Yasmin Tonon, who will attend Bentley University to play Division II Volleyball next fall. Yasmin exemplifies the character it takes to guide a team to success. She demonstrates not only confidence and skill, but also an unwavering positive attitude that inspires her teammates. Yasmin reflects, “Volleyball has taught me how to overcome adversity… it has taught me to treat everyone with kindness and no matter how tough things get to always be positive and to be patient.” Her words reveal the mindset that has made her such a valuable asset to the team. She turns obstacles into opportunities for growth and creates an environment full of encouragement and respect. Yasmin continues to grow as a player, with even greater achievements on the horizon.
Of course, there is more to a team than pure talent: spirit, energy, and commitment. This varsity volleyball team embodies those qualities. Every time they step on the court, they bring their best selves and put respect on North Broward’s name. Emma emphasizes, “My teammates give me a lot of advice beyond volleyball. I have learned many important life lessons and skills. The lessons help me not just become a better volleyball player, but a better human being.” These athletes create a bond that goes beyond teammates, forming an environment filled with excitement while fostering a strong work ethic to continually improve.
To be an Eagle means to show courage, power, and strength. Each member of the varsity volleyball team epitomizes that spirit and continues to give her all both on the court and on the sideline. Through the ups and downs of every rally, they build each other up and celebrate their accomplishments. In the wise words of Yasmin: “Try your best, and always be humble, work hard, and enjoy the time you spend with your teammates.” Seasons don’t last forever, and the Lady Eagles remind us just how important it is to cherish the time spent playing together. As they head toward the finish of their season, they continue to work hard each game, pushing to make every point, every minute, and every memory count.
